I got this

I haven’t done an update on my Kindle Fire in a while. I still think it is spectacular. The best thing is still the portability. While I’m working, I can check my email without getting up. I can watch Grey’s Anatomy (reruns) without my laptop. This goes for numerous things.

There is only one thing missing from my Fire: a Spotify app. Ugh, yes I know there is now an app for the iPad which does not mean an app for the Fire is near. ūüė¶¬† I have every music related app on my Fire (IHeartRadio, TuneIn Radio, Stitcher Radio, Pandora, and more).¬† Spotify is the best thing for music lovers. However it can get us music geeks in trouble. At first I was going through my music wish list and actually buying the albums that were great after listening to them on Spotify. I’ve had to stop that pricey habit.

I just read an article that compares Spotify and Pandora. To me there is no comparison. It is really simple. People who like to listen to full albums (like ME) will choose Spotify. People who like random songs and enjoy radio will choose Pandora. I’m not a huge fan of Pandora. Honestly I haven’t tried hard enough to get Pandora to create a sound for me. They just play random crap. ūüėČ But music is music and sometimes I will pull up Pandora on my Fire while I’m reading.

Back to my Kindle…I definitely don’t need to take my laptop and Kindle Fire on a 3 day beach trip. (However, my Kindle Keyboard is a must. I read a lot at the beach). I will take my laptop because this will be his first chance to travel. ūüôā But with the Kindles, there is no need to take a computer for such a short trip. I probably won’t use it…unless I can’t wait to upload pictures. But I have the room so why not take it? Speaking of reading: This will be my first 3D free book trip. I have so much room in my suitcase. I usually have about 3-4 books when I go anywhere overnight but thanks to Kindle, I don’t need all that.

My most used apps are:

  • Pulse (news from various sources)
  • Words with friends (I love word games. I usually like to play against a computer but I like WWF)
  • Tweetcaster for Twitter (easy access to all types of news via Twitter)
  • Bills Reminder (I rely on this app way too much)
  • Angry Birds (I just d/l this a week ago but I’ve played it a ton #late)
  • Netflix(This is the best freakin’ app. During slow times @ work, I can watch whatever I want. Since I’ve cancelled some of my bills, I have upgraded to the $15 a month plan. Streaming is unlimited…but everything can’t be streamed. The Wire – I’m looking at you).

Note that I haven’t listed any music/radio apps because I use different apps for different things. When I want to listen to the DC sports radio I have to use —–. When I want to listen to Rachel Maddow’s show I have to use another app. And then when I want to listen to another podcast, I have to use another app. This is frustrating and confusing. One day I went through 3 apps to find a Chicago radio station. I need a spreadsheet that lists who is on what. I’m seriously thinking about doing that because sometimes I just don’t listen because I can’t remember which radio app to use. Annoying.

Oh and the worst thing is still the battery life. I only charge my KK once every 10 days. I charge the Fire daily. When I use the Netflix app, I sometimes charge it twice a day.

The Fire is still stupendous! (PLEASE ADD SPOTIFY!)

somewhere trouble don’t go

I’m proud of myself. I made two hard phone calls today. One I had been putting off for months. The other was a new issue. Of course the calls didn’t go as bad as I thought they would. All that anxiety over a little thing. I hate having to make phone calls. I spend more time obsessing over it than actually talking on the phone.

I’m off tomorrow & Friday for March Madness. The people at work considered this dumb. Taking time off just to watch basketball during the day? I know¬†some thought my love of sports was dumb because I heard someone say it. It just made them feel better about themselves.¬†Oh you watch sports? You must be dumb. I’ve been able to get time off work for¬†March Madness every year since I’ve been in my current department. *STEREOTYPE ALERT* That is the bonus¬†of working with mostly females. ūüėČ I hate when females¬†confirm the “I don’t get sports” stereotypes by the way. I cringe every time¬†I hear someone say something like, “I only like [insert team] because those are my colors!” Oh god, I hate that. I hate when people reinforce stereotypes in general. I know I have in the past. I’m not saying that I’m not guilty of this.

Basketball starts at noon on both days. I have my time filled before those hours. On Friday I have to mow my lawn at my house. I so don’t want to. :/ This will be my first mow of 2012. I hate that I don’t even live there but I still have to mow that damn lawn. It is good exercise though. I do need something to complement my sporadic treadmill use. On the average, I get on about 3 times a week. Not good enough. I don’t get motivated unless I eat something bad like red velvet cake. Anyhow, tomorrow I might go out to eat alone again. Not sure. I’ll see how I feel after I run my errands. I have a $5 off coupon so breakfast will only be about $5.00. I have to go.

Random: I think all restaurants¬†should be required to serve breakfast all day. It would make a lot of people very happy. ūüôā

Okay, I’m not really sure this is drama ………..but my coworker asked me (by text) to go to a thing on Saturday. At first I was thinking, “Uh, HELL NO. Basketball is on all day!” I still feel that way. LOL. But I decided to say something about having some free time on Saturday. But I haven’t heard back from her. I’m not broaching the subject because I don’t want to miss basketball. Plus the event is religion based. Once again, I’m not a religious person. So I’m not dying to go even if I had nothing to do.

The drama is within myself. Did I say something wrong in the text? I’m not a normal conversationalist. I just say what I mean. I don’t sugarcoat things. I don’t say anything mean. But when I do talk I’m upfront. I would say exactly what I said to her but I feel strange about that. It was only 3 sentences. Was I supposed to say, “That sounds great!” Because I didn’t. Because it doesn’t sound¬†great. I want to watch basketball. That is why I took Thursday and Friday off. It is important to me but I thought about how she hasn’t asked me to go anywhere in a long time.

Maybe she will call tonight. (She was supposed to call yesterday). And then I know I didn’t hurt her feelings. On the other hand, that means I’m missing basketball. Can’t really win with this one.

Kindle Fire time.

I love my baby. I’m still having a hard time with the short battery life. My god, it is horrible! I’m probably making it¬†sound worse than it really is. Maybe people who have an iTouch¬†or any smart phone is used to this? I don’t know. The Fire does not compare to the iPad. At all. It is basically a smart phone without the phone. That’s it. If you want more, buy another tablet. (not necessarily an iPad). In fact¬†Amazon doesn’t call the Fire a tablet, because it isn’t one.

What it is, is what I love. ūüôā I’m discovering new things I can do every day. Today I listened to podcasts without having to download them. I also can listen to at least one local HD radio channel (our NPR). I squealed¬†when I saw that. I’ve wanted to listen to that channel forever. It is news talk ALL day unlike the other public channel which brings only certain NPR shows on. The best thing about the Fire, is the portability. I have access to a laptop while I’m working but I hate dragging that thing around. Now I can just do about everything on my Fire….except work on it. Bummer.

I will probably do reviews on more apps as I get them. My favorite new app is a screen dimmer. I think it will allow me to read books on the Fire. What a concept. Reading books on a Kindle? Ha. I was able to read a little on it today but I haven’t given it enough time. I just want to avoid a headache if I can. I’m still reading most stuff on my KK¬†but I want to read two books at once and I thought this would be the best way to do it but it isn’t necessary. It would be nice to be able to see the newspapers I read in color though.

Heart Skips a Beat

Bummed to hear about John Mayer having to cancel his whole tour. I can’t imagine how he must feel. ūüė¶ Music is his life, his career, his everything. Get better John. We will wait for you.

Kindle Fire review Part I (I doubt I do a part II but you never know)

First my history: I have never had a touch device. I have never had/used a smartphone. The only Apple thing I have is the iPod. I have a Kindle Keyboard which is very different from the Fire.

It is heavier than I thought it would be. I cannot hold this in one hand and relax like I do with my KK¬†(kindle keyboard). I can barely read on it. I got a headache after reading the¬† local newspaper for 30 minutes. I don’t think my Fire will be used¬†for reading. I did try reading a book the next day and I didn’t get a headache. I¬† was scared¬†to read for too long. I will keep reading books on my KK.

All of the other negatives I experienced within the first hour of having the thing! LOL. Except for the web browsing experience. People complain about it but I really like it. The screen isn’t too small. It is fast. My main complaint is the battery life. I like to stream talk radio and music. That uses wi-fi. That eats up the battery. If a person plays game, they can turn off the wifi. But if you want to stream a movie, TV show, music (and some apps) then you will need Wi-Fi. People pretty much charge their Fires daily. It charges quickly using the adapter they give you. The Fire doesn’t come with a USB. I tried using my KK¬†USB to charge my Fire. I couldn’t tell if it even charged it! If it does it is realllllllly slow. I hate having to plug it in the wall because I have zero outlets in my room. Anyhow…

So since I won’t be reading on it…let’s get to the thing I will be doing: USING APPS. ūüôā I’m obsessed with apps. Obsessed. I have a few that I love already.

  • Scanner Radio Pro¬†– I have wanted a scanner for so long that I got the paid version. There is a free version of this app. I have to use headphones to hear anything clearly. (Side note: I get the volume complaints. They really need to fix this issue with the Kindle 2. Read any review to read about the volume issue). You can hear what you would think you can hear. Heh. Police, fire, EMS etc. You can listen to cities in¬†multiple countries. I listened to the popular Chicago station. I listened for about an hour before I heard something really distrubing. I wasn’t expected it because for the whole¬†hour it was basically “people with weed” sightings. And someone got hit in the head but the person was okay. And then to hear something so tragic with NO follow up. I had to stop but I doubt I give it up.
  • Hotmail¬†– I have 3 main email addresses. Hotmail is one of them. This app is free. What can I say? I love my email. I use the app that was already on the device for my Gmail account. I’m going to set up another app for my Yahoo email soon. Using apps is just waaaay easier than using the web plus it is easier to know when you have new email.
  • TuneIn Radio¬†– free app. I’m using this now to listen to talk radio. (This guy is ranting about Ayn Rand for some reason. How random). This is the closet I will get to having satellite radio. Ahh, I love renting a car with satellite radio. When I have one, I will just sit¬†in the car and listen to the radio. The difference is the stations of TuneIn have commercials. You can pretty much listen to any channel in any city. Music and talk. Love.
  • Tweetcaster for Twitter. Free. If you love twitter you will love this. However, if you turn the Fire off (or just wi-fi) it won’t show ALL the tweets you missed. Not a huge deal to me.
  • Pulse. My favorite app. This app is already loaded on the Fire. If you like to read news or just stuff on the net, you will LOVE this app. I already have too many favorite topics so I’m going to have to build a page two. I’m trying not to do that. Anyway it is awesome. ūüôā The ESPN app is a major fail. I was so disappointed. But fear not! Pulse has ESPN and Yahoo Sports covered.
  • YP Local Search and Gas Prices. My favorite part of this app is being able to view movie times and restaurant menus. It also shows the cheapest gas in your area.

I also use Bill Reminder, ColorNote¬†(not impressed yet), Pandora (same as on the web), Tapatalk¬†Forum App, and TV Listings. ESPN¬†is the worst app. I hate it. :/ Note how I haven’t listed any games. That is because I mostly play Scrabble and Monopoly. I play those on my laptop so I feel no need to get it for my Fire. I am looking for a great word game. I’m willing to pay for it so it has to be the best. I’m doing my research.

I think the Fire is great for kids. Mainly because most of the available¬†apps¬†seem to be games!! That is slightly annoying. Yes there are adult games too…but I don’t want to get addicted to playing so I’m not touching them.

Overall, I love my Fire. I¬†do keep reminding myself that I can return it in 30 days and get all my money back. ¬†But what are the chance of me doing that? It is just a toy so far but I’m trying to find productive apps (games, games, games). I’m using ColorNote¬†to document everything¬†important I do each day¬†since I have a horrible memory. It is supposed¬†to be¬†a to-do app but I don’t like it for that. I’m still looking for a good To-Do app and something I can take really good notes with. I haven’t tried QuickPro¬†yet (the free version is preloaded on the Fire). That may fill the need.

I feel like I’ve been typing¬†forever. I’m sure I forgot to mention something – like how good the movies look, for example. I’m done for now.

Here we go again

lust or love?

EDITED TO ADD: I may keep a running log of my thoughts at the bottom of this post. Afterall, I don’t want a bunch of kindle fire posts when I don’t even own one…yet.

Self control, where art thou?

LOL. I’m seriously thinking about getting a Kindle Fire. WTF is wrong with me? It is nothing but a toy. On the other hand, the iPad is a toy and I would use it for work. But I am not spending that much on a tablet when I have two laptops. (Woah, what???! – I brought one about¬†5 years ago. Yes it is still working. I never expected it to last this long. It has lasted longer than¬†all my other computers.¬†FYI it is a¬†Campaq¬†Pressaro. My model is no longer made. And the other laptop is practically brand new. It is my mom’s. She never uses it and since my laptop is old/a little slow, she “gave”¬† her laptop to me. It is a HP Pro Book. I actually like my old laptop better than the ProBook). Now that that is out of the way….where was I?

HP ProBook

Okay so an iPad would be great but I’m not that¬†foolish. So I’m considering a Kindle Fire. I know me. When I think about something this much, I either need to buy it or stop researching it. Buying it sounds so much easier.¬†ūüėȬ†I have been working overtime. I did get a tax refund. I no longer buy new clothes since I work at home. I’m saving on gas (but not a ton since I still drive my car). I’m trying to justify my want…

However, I have a house to fix up. Trust me, I’m only doing the minimal. But I don’t know how much that will cost. I have debt. I used some of my extra money to pay the¬†credit card company. ($900 balance – just paid $200. BUT I was planning on paying $400). I have money saved to go to summer school this summer but I don’t have the money in savings for fall yet. Once fall is over, I’M DONE with school but I still have to get certified so I won’t be done studying or spending money.

Sigh. adkfffffffffdkkkkkkkkk

I can taste it. I want one. I love gadgets. If I do get one, I would mainly use it when I travel. (The HP Pro Book is not made for traveling). I would use it daily for mostly streaming music and APPS, APPS, APPS. I already have a regular Kindle (a gift) for reading books so I’m not planning on using the Fire for that. ¬†I don’t know. The Kindle Fire is just so portable. PLUS I am one of the few people who don’t have a smart phone so a Kindle Fire would be my smart phone without the phone. Do you know how long I’ve wanted a smart phone? YEARS. I’m not kidding.

Being a grown up sucks.

I will probably get it. I will decide by tomorrow. I’m beating myself up now for thinking about it but I bet I won’t regret it once I have it……unless something terrible happens. Oh dear! What do I do? I can’t blame Amazon. If it weren’t for them, I would be eying the $199 Samsung Galaxy.

On edit: I’m back to not wanting one now. I can’t get over how much of a toy it is. I want to use it for apps (mostly). I’m finding out that there is a memory issue with a ton of apps and also, with a Fire ALL the Android apps are not available. Only certain apps are available like ESPN, Words w/Friends etc. I dunno. This is not good. If I wait for Kindle Fire¬†2 -I’m¬†sooooo¬†not patient- will there be more memory? Probably.

This may be a small issue but since I already have a regular Kindle, do I have to keep logging in and out of Amazon to chose which Kindle I want the content downloaded to?

This is a tiny want: I wish it had a microphone. I would be pissed off if I brought a Fire and then the Fire 2 comes with a microphone.

Huh? No spotify¬†app? I started using Spotify last month and now I’m addicted. Bummer. What am I supposed to do? Listen to Pandora or I heart Radio? I guess so…YAY I found the TuneIn¬†App. It isn’t spotify but it will do.

I’m now loading my wishlist with Apps. I’m so getting a Fire. ūüôā ……maybe.

I’ve wanted a smartphone since 2003! THIS IS MY TIME! I’m getting a Kindle Fire….I think.
